The Challenge
A cosmetics manufacturer discovered a brown, cloud-like residue forming in selected bottles held at multiple warehouses. Internal reviews found no clear manufacturing problem, shipments were delayed, and a microbial cause was suspected.
Our Investigation
Quantum Analytics Group used FTIR microscopy to characterize the foreign material, HPLC to confirm its composition, and controlled-temperature studies to reproduce the condition under which it formed.
The Result
The residue was identified as a plant protein associated with the product's natural ingredients—not bacterial contamination. Lower storage temperatures promoted its precipitation.
The client used the findings to improve warehouse temperature controls and resolve the issue without months of additional trial-and-error investigation.
- Unknown material identification
- FTIR microscopy and HPLC
- Temperature-based stability evaluation
- Root-cause investigation
