How GC-MS Works

A sample is introduced into the gas chromatograph where it is volatized, and its analytes are separated according to their boiling points and their interaction with the stationary phase of the capillary column. As a compound elutes sequentially from the column, it is introduced into the mass spectrometer, where each undergoes ionization and fragmentation. The resulting ions are then resolved according to their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios, producing characteristic spectra that enable unequivocal compound identification.
